Nerine Martini

Nerine Martini is a visual artist and arts educator working in the fields of sculpture, installation, drawing and public art.

Martini’s practice involves a continual shift between a studio / exhibition practice and working on community-based, public art projects. She has an interest in working cross-culturally and creating artworks that respond to stories of migration, belonging, dislocation, cultural identity and home. Interweaving personal and universal threads Martini’s work poetically expresses concerns for humanity and our shared social and natural environments.

Martini has exhibited widely and her work has received numerous awards. She has completed many public art commissions; most recently she was commissioned to create public artworks for Blacktown City Council and for Wollongong City Council. The sculptural materials, techniques and process employed in her art practice are often integral to the meanings embodied in the works. The various techniques, processes and materials have included: cast paper, ceramics, carved wood, etched stone pavement, laser-cut steel and cast bronze. This often requires a collaborative approach working with other professionals: architects, planners, and engineers and working with skilled fabricators and crafts people.

Martini is currently undertaking a PhD at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney and holds a Master of Fine Arts by research (sculpture) at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales. Since 2006 she has lectured in Sculpture, Object Design and Ceramics at the Australian Catholic University, Strathfield.
