In Transit 2015

In Transit is created from bamboo, it is inspired by my travels in South East Asia; it suggests the precarious nature of migration and fragility. The work, made from bamboo, is about the precarious nature of the ocean journey; and the search for a better, freer life.

Part of the sculpture is a series of bamboo ladders. Bamboo has so many possibilities, for instance in Asia it is commonly used for scaffolding, it’s a strong, lightweight, and it’s a sustainable material.

To construct the sculpture I had some assistance from an Ikebana teacher in Sydney who generously taught me techniques of wiring the bamboo together. Her approach was very sensitive to space, shape and the qualities of the material
